1) WHAT IS YOUR WHY?

Now that my children are grown (my youngest is in college), I had been seeking a way to make a difference in the community—preferably working with children. When I heard about Bright Start's mission, I knew it was the perfect fit!

2) WHAT COMPONENT OF BRIGHT START DO YOU MOST ENJOY WITH YOUR MENTEE?

Each week, when I see my mentee's face light up as he jumps out of the van, it absolutely makes my day. I love knowing that he enjoys our time together—almost as much as I do!

3) FAVORITE MENTORING MOMENT TO DATE?

It may sound silly, but during one of our sessions together, my mentee noticed a bee outside and started asking questions about them. I told him I would look for a book about bees and bring it next time. When we got together the following week and I pulled out a book about bees, he was ecstatic. It was as if he was surprised I remembered. In fact, he asked if we could read it again the following week!

4) IN WHAT WAYS HAS MENTORING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?

Mentoring a child is a great reminder that we all have something of value to offer, lessons to share, and talents to teach. But it's also about showing a child that they have someone in their corner, listening to them, supporting them, and rooting for them. Knowing that you've made a child smile and perhaps given them some extra tools to succeed has got to be one of the best feelings in the world!

5) WHO ARE YOU WHEN YOU'RE NOT CHANGING THE LIVES OF OUR YOUNG LEARNERS?

I'm a mom of two grown children and work as an internal communications manager at the Disneyland Resort.
